Residents want politicians to fulfil their promises

Stop lying to us, angry Epworth residents warn politicians

Epworth residents have come out guns blazing, accusing politicians of taking them for a ride by lying about regularising their illegal structures only to solicit for votes and disappear.

Speaking during a highly charged quarterly constituency indaba in Epworth, residents said politicians were taking advantage of their desperation to get votes and forget about them once they win.

The indaba was convened by the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development in the populous suburb of Overspill.

“I think evil spirits are here in Epworth. All these councillors and MPs come to deceive us. They say they will represent us well and assist us to regularise our structures, they are all lies,” charged one resident.

“The politicians come and go and all use one modus operandi. We are tired,” he added.

Epworth Ward 3 Councillor, Gift July, (MDC) however blamed political interference from all political parties for the problems bedevilling Epworth.

“It must be the duty of local authority to give people where to build their houses but that’s not the scenario in Epworth. People are settling themselves all over and we have seen that they are getting that power from high political offices,” July said.

He accused both MDC and Zanu PF councillors and politicians for the mess.

Epworth MP Earthrage Kureva said elected officials must stop thinking as political party actors once elected.

“We know that the elephant in this room is stationed there at the local board. The problem is that some officials and councillors think politically, which is very poisonous for development,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development is engaging in a nationwide constituency indaba campaign where they have been holding meetings with communities and their political leadership to discuss social and economic justice.

Epworth has had MPs from both the ruling Zanu PF party and the MDC, among them the late former Harare Zanu PF provincial chairman, Amos Midzi, Zalerah Makari (Zanu PF).
