Police gun down notorious armed robbers in Kwekwe
Four armed robbers who had terrorised people since last year were shot dead while one was seriously injured by police during a shootout in Kwekwe in the Midlands province.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the robbers had terrorised people and committed various crimes in and around Harare.
“From October 2018 to date the suspects committed a spate of robberies in and around Harare and some parts of the country where they would target business and residential premises,” Nyathi said in a statement.
The five are George Munyaradzi Machanyanga (37), Harmony Nyathi (29), Polite Madamombe (34), Titus Mushava (42), Michael Vioma(34) and were on police wanted list.
Police were investigating more than 24 cases the suspects were involved in.
“The police detectives are investigating 24 recorded cases in which the suspects got away with large sums of cash, ($US 84 345, ZWL30 814, ZAR16000, 100 000 Mozambique Meticals, 1 100 pounds sterling, 2000 Dubai Currency and 4 860 Chinese Yuan) in both foreign and local
currency, gold, jewellery, motor vehicles, 18 cell phones, three iPhones and six pistols, one pellet gun among other valuables” Nyathi said.
On Wednesday, detectives caught up with the robbers in Kwekwe who were in the process of robbing and the suspects immediately opened fire.
Police returned fire and gave chase, leading to the shooting of the suspects.
Police said during the commission of the crimes, the robbers would cover their faces with black masks and threaten victims with firearms.
At one point, the suspects are said to have shot and injured a police officer who was reacting to a report after the suspects were found in the process of robbing a shop in Chitungwiza.
