JUST IN : Police arrest ZCTU bosses over demo

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions president Peter Mutasa and secretary general Japhet Moyo, have been arrested ahead of their planned demonstration against Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube’s 2-cents-per-dollar tax announced recently leading to an economic crisis that has hit the country.

Police had stopped the demonstration citing the Cholera epidemic and a government ban on public gatherings after the death of more than 49 people.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights confirmed the arrests at the ZCTU offices.

“In Harare ZLHR has deployed lawyers to offer emergency legal support to ZCTU leaders including president Peter Mutasa and Secretary General Japhet Moyo arrested by Police at their Harare offices today ahead of a planned anti-government protest,” the ZLHR said.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police had quashed an intended demonstration by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) citing a government ban on public gatherings due to the Cholera epidemic.
