Easter Monday accident claims 11

…holidays death toll rises to 24

Eleven people died while 16 others were injured after a commuter omnibus carrying members of an apostolic sect from Mutare was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit at the 180km peg along Harare-Mutare highway on Monday.


Police national Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.

“The Honda Fit was trying to overtake another vehicle and proceeding towards Mutare had a head on collision with a Nissan Caravan carrying 22 people and coming from an apostolic church,” he said.

“All four people in the Honda Fit died on the spot and seven from the Nissan Caravan died on the spot.”

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said so far 225 road accidents have occurred during this year’s Easter Holiday.

Twenty four people have died and 134 injured.

He urged motorists to obey road rules to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
