BREAKING NEWS : Cosafa throws Zifa under the bus
The Council of Southern African Football Associations, Cosafa, has banned the Zimbabwe senior men's national soccer team from participating at the 2020 competition
The ban resulted after Zimbabwe failed to honour an agreement to host the 2019 edition of the COSAFA Cup. ZIFA pulled out of holding the tournament in the last-minute after the government had refused to help them in hosting the event.
However, had ZIFA agreed to host the 2020 edition the suspension could have been avoided but the association failed to submit their response before June 30.
“Zimbabwe Football Association is hereby suspended from participating with the senior men’s national soccer team in the 2020 edition of the COSAFA Cup. Payment in the amount of USD 200 000 must be paid to Cosafa by the deadline 15th of August 2019” said Cosafa secretary general Sue Destombes in a statement.
Zimbabwe will only be allowed to participate in future COSAFA tournament after paying the US$200 000 fine in full.
Ironically, former Zifa president Philip is the Cosafa president and has been fighting with Zifa as he was alleged to have influenced the players' behaviour in the Afcon finals camp.
There were moves to force Cosafa to suspend Chiyangwa from Cosafa which was rejected by the regional association.
